Montafoner Winterzauber
Annually from Shortly before Christmas until Early January
The most beautiful and contemplative time of the year becomes a musical experience in Montafon. Atmospheric concerts add a touch of magic to the Christmas season. With its special charm, Montafoner Winterzauber is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the festive anticipation and immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of snow-covered Montafon. The programme also includes Christmas markets in Tschagguns and Bartholomäberg, the large Silbriga Sunntig market in Schruns, nativity exhibitions and more than 50 events.
Brass ensembles, solo artists and various bands perform at fascinating venues including churches, chapels, an alpine SPA, cultural stages and open-air locations – bidding a contemplative farewell to the old year and welcoming the new one in high spirits.
Funkensonntag & Funken Bonfires in Montafon
On the First Sunday after Ash Wednesday
On Funkensonntag, the first Sunday after Carnival, the traditional Funken bonfire is lit to drive away winter. On Friday and Saturday, you can watch the impressive Funken tower being constructed in villages throughout Montafon while enjoying a freshly baked Funkenküachli. On Saturday, you can also support the traditional Funken watch with a warming glass of mulled wine. On Sunday – and occasionally on Saturday – the event culminates in a festive spectacle as the tower bursts into flames, illuminating the night beneath the cheers of the crowd.
Ski Cross & Snowboard Cross in Montafon

The world’s best snowboarders gather for thrilling competition at the FIS Snowboard Cross World Cup on the demanding course at Grasjoch in the Silvretta Montafon ski area. The athletes compete on a challenging course featuring steep sections and tight bends, creating breathtaking action and exciting head-to-head racing.
Sports enthusiasts can watch the spectacle free of charge from beside the piste and cheer on the Montafon ski and snowboard cross athletes.
FIS Snowboard, Freestyle & Freeski World Championships 2027
6–21 March 2027
From 6 to 21 March 2027, Montafon will become an international meeting place for the world’s elite in snowboarding, freestyle skiing and freeskiing. The best athletes will compete for medals in disciplines including snowboard cross, ski cross, slopestyle, Big Air, halfpipe, parallel giant slalom, parallel slalom, aerials and moguls.
With 31 medal events currently planned across six venues in four ski areas, the World Championships will be the largest winter sports event in Vorarlberg’s history. The entire Montafon region will become part of this special sporting occasion, featuring international competition, an exciting atmosphere and a varied supporting programme throughout the valley.
Summer Solstice Bonfires in Montafon

When the longest day meets the shortest night, mountain bonfires illuminate the darkness in many locations.
The summer solstice is traditionally celebrated during the weekend around 21 June, the longest day of the year. On Saturday, 21 June, mountain enthusiasts carry torches and plenty of firewood to higher elevations to keep the tradition of the solstice bonfires alive as night falls.
Glowing summits and blazing mountain ridges create a spectacular sight. As far back as the Middle Ages, people held large celebrations and believed that watching the flames would bring good fortune, blessings and healing. In earlier eras, however, the summer solstice did not hold the same significance as it does today. Instead, the so-called St John’s bonfires were lit on the night before 24 June, the Feast of St John.
Raiffeisen Montafon Arlberg Marathon
Usually on the Final Weekend of June
The Raiffeisen Montafon Arlberg Marathon offers a spectacular running experience covering 42.195 kilometres and 1,250 metres of elevation gain through the Alps. The marathon connects Silbertal in Montafon with St. Anton am Arlberg via the Winterjöchle. Its demanding route leads through the impressive Natura 2000 Verwall protected area and combines marathon running, trail running, nature and alpine elevation. The direction between the start and finish and the exact route may change depending on the year.
Alongside the main marathon, there are also routes for beginners and walkers, as well as a children’s trail. The event is supported by Raiffeisenbank Bludenz-Montafon and Raiffeisenbank Arlberg Silvretta.
Silvretta Classic Rallye Montafon
Usually on the First Weekend of July
Every year, the hearts of classic-car enthusiasts beat faster in Montafon.
The impressive vehicles of the 1920s take to the Silvretta Hochalpenstraße, closely followed by elegant luxury cars from the 1930s. As the engines of legendary sports cars and charming everyday vehicles from the post-war era roar and hum, automotive history becomes an unforgettable experience for participants and spectators alike. It is a rare opportunity to admire these icons of motoring history against a breathtaking mountain backdrop.
Montafon Totale Trail
Usually on the First Weekend of July
At the Montafon Totale Trail, runners take on the challenges of high-alpine terrain. Hundreds of motivated runners from different countries, four routes covering 10, 16, 31 and 45 kilometres, elevation differences ranging from 1,200 to 3,780 metres and eight refreshment stations – these are the impressive facts behind the Montafon Totale Trail.
Participants are no ordinary trail runners. They embrace every challenge, face the changing mountain weather, demonstrate exceptional endurance and love technically demanding routes. With determination, they fight for every metre of elevation, always striving to run higher, faster and further.
Montafon Totale Kids: The youngest runners are also an important part of the Montafon Totale Trail. While the Bambini gain their first experience of mountain running on the course around Nova Stoba, children and juniors can test their stamina on the longer route towards the Vier Barga viewpoint. Every child receives a medal, while the top three participants in each age category are also awarded a trophy. The largest group wins an exclusive adventure day in Silvretta Montafon.
M³ Montafon Mountain Bike Marathon
Usually at the End of July or Beginning of August
The M³ takes place annually on the final weekend of July. With its beautiful and remarkably varied mountain landscape, Montafon is a paradise for mountain bike and e-mountain bike enthusiasts and therefore the perfect setting for what is considered one of Austria’s most popular mountain bike marathons.
Alongside the sporting competitions over distances of 45, 60 and 75 kilometres, the M³ Montafon Mountain Bike Marathon also features an enjoyable culinary e-mountain bike tour and an e-mountain bike hydropower tour. The latter gives participants an exclusive insight into how hydropower is used to generate energy in Montafon.

Montafoner Resonanzen – Music Festival in Montafon
August until Early September
A personal musical experience in Montafon. Every year, high-quality performances from a variety of musical genres take place at weekends from August until early September. Montafoner Resonanzen brings renowned artists to the valley each year. The programme encompasses a wide variety of styles, including brass music, chamber music, jazz, folk music, crossover and organ music. The festival has developed into a musical gem and is considered a hidden treasure by guests and hosts alike.
Against the impressive high-alpine backdrop of Montafon, musicians jam and play jazz together. During this period, the boundaries between genres disappear: Baroque music may meet pop, while folk music blends with jazz.
Montafon is a valley filled with musical monuments. Within a remarkably compact area, 16 organs dating from four different centuries allow organ music from the Baroque period to the present day to be performed authentically and experienced in new ways.
Montafon Legends Festival in Silbertal
July and August
The open-air stage in picturesque Silbertal enjoys a magnificent hillside location surrounded by wild and romantic natural scenery. During the summer months, it becomes the setting for the spectacular and mystical performances of the Montafon Legends Festival. In summer 2026 and 2027, the production “Die Lareina Schwestern” from the fascinating world of local legends will be performed here.
The 20,000 m² open-air stage is one of the largest in Europe. It features more than 15 authentic buildings and structures, including a hay barn, an alpine building with a dairy, a small church, a chapel, a farmhouse, a lake, fountains, ponds, an impressive waterfall and many lovingly designed details.
Traditional Cattle Drives in Montafon
In September, Depending on the Weather and Alpine Farming Season
For centuries, livestock in Montafon have spent the summer grazing on high alpine pastures. In September, the well-fed cattle return to the valley. The traditional cattle drive has always been an occasion for celebration, during which farmers gratefully welcome their healthy animals home.
The procession of decorated animals also includes sheep, goats and donkeys – collectively known as the Piefl – and is welcomed with food, drinks and sometimes musical accompaniment. A particularly warm welcome is given to the Milchstöfleri, the cow that produced the most milk during summer. It is easily recognised by the largest and most beautiful Maien, the floral decoration. The date of each cattle drive depends on the weather. If snow arrives early, the event may be brought forward at short notice.
Usually at the beginning of September, the cattle from Alpe Zamang and Alpe Nova return to the valley near the Valiserabahn in St. Gallenkirch, accompanied by refreshments and live music.
